About Don

Don is an artist who is living and working in Portland, Maine.

He has been a portrait artist for over 26 years. He painted the posthumous portrait of L.L. Bean for the L.L. Bean Company in Freeport, Maine, Marvin Sadik the former director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., Mrs. A.G. Monks for Robert Monks, as well as the likeness of the late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce for her private collection.

Don has painted portraits of children throughout the Northeast as well as Europe. He provided court room artwork for NBC, CBS, and ABC in Portland, Boston, and for the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.

He was the Merit Award Recipient at the 1981 Portrait Painter’s Seminar in New York City. His award winning painting, selected from among those of artists representing all 50 states and five different countries, appeared in the March 1982 issue of American Artist Magazine.

In addition to portraits, Don now executes Maine landscapes in oils and pastels.

He was selected to exhibit in the prestigious Art Salon Juried show 2006 Winter Exhibition. He is a member of the Pastel Painters of Maine and was selected for their Annual International Exhibition in 2006 and was recently an Honorable Award recipient at their exhibition at Bowdoin College.

Institutions and private collections that own Don’s works include T.D. Bank North; St. Joseph’s College in Windham, Andover College in Portland, and the Elizabeth Noyce Collection and Mercy Hospital, Portland, Maine.

Don holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts and a Master of Fine Arts from the American University in Washington, D.C. He studied with world renowned Boston Expressionists David Aronson, Arthur Polonsky, and Reed Kay. In addition, he studied with New York artists Robert D'Arista and Stephen Pace. He was also guided by the great American portrait artist Gardner Cox. Gardner Cox painted most of the Supreme Court Justices between 1950 and 1980.

Don recentley showed work at Black Cat Coffee on Stevens Ave. in Portland, Maine.

Don had a late call in life to ministry. He is the pastor of Deering Center Community Church and Stroudwater Baptist Church in Portland, Maine.
