Baxter Island
This painting is about "beauty amongst the broken." I have done several paintings of this rock near the seashore. It is unattractive and has been battered by the sea for centuries. At the same time, it is surrounded by the beauty of Creation. Despite nature's relentless assault, the rock stands firm and secure. Nature around the rock continues to go through cyclical changes. The rock does not. It is unattractive compared to the beauty around it. However, it offers us a beauty that does not change.
The prophet Isaiah said; "There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him" (NLT). And King David said; "He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken" (Psalm 62:2 NLT).
